Meru is a genuine mountain in its own right — a collapsed volcano with a knife-edge summit ridge, walked through a national park where buffalo and giraffe mean an armed ranger comes with you. It is also the most useful four days you can spend before attempting Kilimanjaro.
A real mountain, not a warm-up
Meru is the fifth-highest mountain in Africa and a serious objective in its own right. It is a collapsed volcano: one wall of the crater blew out, leaving a horseshoe rim with a sheer inner face and an ash cone sitting inside it. The route follows that rim to Socialist Peak at 4,566 m.
Because it sits inside Arusha National Park, an armed ranger accompanies every group — there are buffalo, giraffe and elephant on the lower slopes. Most climbers find this the most memorable thing about the first day.
What the climb is like
Three or four days, staying in mountain huts rather than tents. Day one climbs through forest and open grassland with wildlife around you. Day two goes up to Saddle Hut at 3,570 m, with an optional afternoon walk up Little Meru at 3,820 m — a genuinely useful acclimatisation hour with a spectacular view.
Summit day starts around one or two in the morning and follows the crater rim, which is narrow and exposed in places, to reach the peak for sunrise. On a clear morning Kilimanjaro floats on the cloud layer to the east, and it is one of the great views in East Africa.
Who Meru suits
- Anyone climbing Kilimanjaro who has the time to acclimatise properly first
- Trekkers who want a real mountain without the crowds — Meru sees a fraction of Kilimanjaro's traffic
- People with four days rather than eight
- Anybody who wants wildlife and altitude in the same trip
Be honest about the ridge
Meru is lower than Kilimanjaro but the summit ridge is considerably more exposed, walked in the dark, with significant drops. No equipment or technical skill is needed, but if heights genuinely worry you, this is the part to think about.
