Pack for several climates in one expedition. A typical layering system includes moisture-managing base layers, insulating mid-layers, a warm down or synthetic jacket, and waterproof/windproof outer shell. Carry warm hat, sun hat, gloves plus warmer summit mitts/gloves, quality hiking socks and broken-in waterproof hiking boots. Your daypack should contain items you need while walking: water, rainwear, warm layer, sun protection, snacks, camera/phone, medications and valuables. Porters carry the permitted duffel allocation and group equipment; keep the duffel simple, durable and protected from moisture. Bring a warm sleeping bag appropriate for sub-zero mountain conditions on camping routes, or arrange rental in advance. Do not arrive with brand-new boots. Test your clothing combinations and pack system during training hikes. TrekUp conducts a pre-climb equipment check so missing or unsuitable items can be identified before departure.
How to use this gear list
Kilimanjaro is a non-technical trek on the normal routes, but the altitude and rapidly changing conditions demand serious mountain clothing. TANAPA advises climbers to carry proper cold-weather and rain gear, a headlamp and personal medication. Your equipment should work as a system: moisture management next to the skin, insulation in the middle and wind/rain protection on the outside.
Do not wait until Tanzania to test critical gear. Boots, socks, backpack fit, waterproof layers, gloves and summit clothing should all be used during training. Avoid cotton for important mountain layers because it retains moisture and dries slowly.
What goes in your daypack?
Carry: waterproof jacket and pants, warm layer, water, snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat, gloves, personal medication, headlamp when needed, camera/phone, toilet essentials and valuables. Your daypack must remain manageable; do not fill it with items that can safely travel in the porter duffel.
What goes in the porter-carried duffel?
Typically: sleeping bag, spare clothing, camp shoes, toiletries, spare socks, additional summit layers and other non-immediate items. TrekUp will confirm the permitted duffel weight before the climb. Pack the interior in waterproof dry bags because mountain rain can be persistent.

Final equipment check in Moshi
Before departure, TrekUp Kilimanjaro conducts a pre-climb briefing and equipment check. Bring every item you intend to use. The guide can identify obvious gaps before you leave for the trailhead. If you plan to rent equipment, arrange it in advance and still inspect fit and condition personally before the climb.
Important: exact quantities depend on route length, season, personal cold tolerance and whether you are using Marangu huts or a camping route. This guide is designed as a professional starting point rather than a substitute for your final route-specific briefing.
